What is Fat Sunday?
Fat Sunday comes to us from the traditions of Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday, and Carnival -- all of them preceding Ash Wednesday when Christians historically have shunned something of the material life for the more somber days during Lent, centering on the practices of fasting, prayer, and acts of compassion.
The French "Mardi Gras" means "Fat Tuesday" in English and comes from the tradition of feasting on a fattened calf on the day before Lent begins. The day is also known as Shrove Tuesday (coming from "to shrive" or "to offer confessions") and, sometimes, Pancake Tuesday and the custom of making pancakes to use up fat, eggs and dairy before the season of fasting and abstinence began.

Well, yes, Lent actually began on February 21st (Ash Wednesday) and a Fat Sunday Celebration really should have occurred on the 18th.
That, however, was the long Presidents' Day weekend when many people were traveling and, well . . . why give a party if no one can come?!

We Made a Joyful Noise!
During our morning worship service and at the afternoon celebration we received a "Joyful Noise Offering" . . . a time when everyone — children and adults — brought the loose change they'd been saving. The children took the collection, carrying pails and coffee cans instead of offering plates or baskets — and the sound of change being given made a "joyful noise"!

· Great Food - Chili (beef and chicken), cornbread, salads, and more . . .
· Great Music — And lots of it!
· Great Generosity — Joining churches throughout the country, we'll share our abundance with those less fortunate, especially the victims of Hurricane Katrina, as well as those served by one of our local organizations . . . and we’ll make a Joyful Noise!
